Malta will officially celebrate National Anthem Day on 27th December, following a proposal that has now been approved and written into the Constitution.
The announcement was made by the Minister for National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, together with Parliamentary Secretary Alison Zerafa Civelli, during a video call with radio host Valentina Rossi the person who originally put the idea forward.
Rossi first proposed creating a dedicated day for Malta’s anthem last March on Magic Radio’s morning show, even calling Prime Minister Robert Abela live on air.
She expressed that Malta’s anthem has always been a source of pride for her, recalling the memorable moments of singing it at school and drawing inspiration from countries that already honour their national anthems annually.
During the call, Bonnici and Zerafa Civelli surprised Rossi with the news that her idea had been taken to Parliament, discussed at length, and ultimately approved. The chosen date, 27th December, commemorates the first time Malta’s national anthem was ever played publicly in 1922.
This marks the first national day dedicated solely to the anthem, recognising its historical, cultural, and symbolic significance for the Maltese Islands.
